2018's Seniors celebrated
It has been said that baseball is a nervous breakdown divided into innings. Friday's Senior Night game versus Raytown certainly fit the bill. But what a memorable night.
After a ceremony to honor the six senior ballplayers and two student managers, the Hornets fell behind early as the Blue Jays scored two in the first, three in the third and three in the fifth. Heading into the bottom of the fifth, things were looking dire. Starter Konnor Thompson was pitching well, but the balls were just finding holes.
The bottom of the seventh changed the fate of the Hornets as they sent 11 men to the plate and scored seven in the inning capped by back to back RBI singles by Trevor Timmermeyer and Grant Lorenzen. Tied at nine, the teams headed to the seventh. Raytown scored two in the top of the frame thanks to three hits and an error, but the Hornets would answer to tie the game in their half of the seventh with Lorenzen and Austin Creekmore both scoring after Lorenzen reached on an error, and Creekmore had a single.
Free baseball was on the menu as neither team would score in the eighth and ninth innings.
Thompson was relieved by Brayden Sell in the fifth, and went the rest of the way, but four straight hits by the Blue Jays scored three in the top of the tenth including RBI doubles by Jacob Ciafullo and Brice Taylor.

But the Hornets never said quit and came back for the third time in the game after a leadoff walk by Bryan Gallen, a single by Tim Moment, a walk by Sebastian Guzman and a sac fly by Trevor Timmermeyer. But a freak double play by Raytown happened during the Lorenzen at bat where the third baseman was able to tag out both Guzman and Lorenzen stopping the Hornets comeback and giving Raytown the one run victory.

The seniors were certainly disappointed, but following the game, the Hornet Diamond Club threw them a picnic showering them with collages and cupcakes.
The Hornets have one more game remaining on their regular season schedule as they will play Tuesday at Grandview and then onto the District Tournament on Saturday, where they'll face the Kearney Bulldogs.
