Opening Day was blustery and cold - that was until the Hornets hot bats warmed the place up. Northtown again jumped on top for the third game in a row and soundly defeated Winnetonka 10-4. Hornet pitchers combined for a five-hitter with starter
Dayton Horn only allowing one hit through three innings.
Brett Kamler started the offensive assault with a two-run homer to left-center in the first inning. From there, the Hornets would score in all but one inning. Timely hitting and air-tight defense led to the Hornets evening their record at 2-2.
Dayton Horn overcame a tight strike zone to only allow one hit through three innings, walking five and striking out four. The pullpen of
Layne Campbell and
Brett Kamler carried the rest of the load allowing only one hit until the seventh. Campbell struck out the side in the sixth. The defense stepped up for NKC as well with only one error in the game. Seniors Kamler and
Noah Devero both scored twice. Devero had a double and overcame a donk in the head on his second at bat to swipe a base and score on the
Nick Ward RBI double. Eight Hornets would get hits in the game and seven would score runs.
The marathon opening week continues with another home game against Raytown on Friday at 4:00. Despite the chilly temperatures, Wednesday's home opener was well attended and kicked off with an opening pitch by NKC wrestling state champion Xavier Doolin.
