Oh. My. Goodness.
In a big Friday night for Hornet's sports, baseball took care of business at home against Oak Park. As they got started, the Hornet's track squad was heating up in a battle at the Jerry Crews Invitational, hosted by Oak Park (the irony)
Hurdler Morgan Verdught opened us up as usual, with a lean finish at the line to place second and put up 8 points for the Hornet's. She would go on to place 2
nd in the 300 hurdles as well.
Next came Kennady Washington, who is became accustomed to first place finishes. She collected first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.23 which ties her for 4
th in the STATE.
Less than five minutes later, Keilan Powell decided to match Washington's performance, running a 10.8 in his 100, tying for first place with Hare from Liberty. Oh, I forgot to mention that both Hare and Powell now hold the number 1 time in the
STATE.
Continuing the back and forth between Powell and Washington, Kennady takes home her fourth consecutive 1
st place finish in the Long Jump, again putting herself in the top state rankings, this time tied for 3
rd. Washington also anchored the 4x100-meter relay team, that is now ranked 5
th in the state. What. A. Performance. Oh wait, that's not it? She also is 10
th in the state for the 200. Still not it? Wow. This really just keeps going. That 100 time puts her in the
TOP 50 IN THE NATION!
After their first meet at Staley Washington said, "At the Staley meet I think I did really well. There're some things I need to work on Independently, but for this to be one of my first meets I think I did well. I finished the day with 4 medals and sitting at 2
nd in state for long jump already." So expect things to keep improving for Washington.
It is extremely difficult to match that production, but Danny Joiner is an anomaly as well. He placed 2
nd in what seems to be an off night, in the shot put, collected himself to finish first in the Discus, and 3
rd in the Javelin as well. On the season, however, he is placed 2
nd in the state in the shot put, LEADS the state in the Discus, and is 9
th in the Javelin. His Discus ranks him
26th IN THE NATION.
Freshman Tom Murgus has continued to show potential in the 400-meter dash, placing 4
th. Cameron Long shined once more, placing 3
rd in the shot put. Zion Moore continued his success in the High Jump, placing 4
th and also taking 2
nd in the long jump. Ariana Rogers took 1
st in the 400-meter dash, and she also ran in the 4x200-meter relay team, who took 2
nd, Mac Foley placed 3
rd and Monica Mangongo placed 5
th in the shot put and Imari Roach tied for 2
nd in the High Jump.
