The no. 4 ranked Hornets survived a thriller in overtime against the no. 23 ranked Park Hill South Panthers, 77-71
Â
North Kansas City went on a characteristic second half run, and held a lead for most of the fourth quarter, until an
Avian Webb turnover spurred a 4-0 run to tie the game with 1:07 to play.
Â
With under 10 seconds, the Hornets possessed a tied 64-64, until an
Iverson Neal scoop shot at the basket dropped for an and-one. Neal missed, and the game earned an extra frame on a three-pointer that earned a foul, as the clock expired. The Panther's Cahmai Crosby had a chance to end it, but missed the first of three free throws, to end regulation at 66-66.
Â
Both defenses shined in the overtime period, as neither team scored until a
Dallas Whitney free throw broke the ice with 2:36 to play. The Panthers responded via Cahmai Crosby, who turned a corner drive into the old-school three-point play, handing the Panthers a 69-67 lead.
Â
The teams traded back-and-forth shots, until a
Dallas Whitney and-one gave the Hornets a 73-71 lead, with 1:28 in overtime. The Hornets would shutout the Panthers, scoring 5 straight to solidify the victory.
Â
Down the stretch, the Panthers lost key figures such as Miles Fant, who finished with 14, as well as JD Roberts, who finished with 17, to foul trouble, which, in addition to senior big man Jack Bjorn being sidelined with a foot injury, led to an uncharacteristic height deficit.Â
Â
After being honored at senior night,
Dallas Whitney went on to score a career-high 38 points, with fellow seniors
Iverson Neal and
John Elful adding 17 and 13, respectively. Combining for 68 points, those three accounted for 88% of the Hornets scoring, including two left corner triples for Elful, that grabbed the momentum in the late fourth quarter.
Â
Per what has become usual, the Hornets trailed 34-31 at half, therefore improving to 12-1 when trailing at the break. That margin shrunk significantly in the second, as the Panthers rode an early start to a big 23-8 lead at the end of the first.
Â
The Hornets finish the regular season 20-5, and take on Park Hill to begin district play, Saturday at 2:00 pm. The game is to be hosted at NKC!
