Men's Basketball Advance Against Park Hill

Districts Round 1 Recap

The 3rd ranked North Kansas City Hornets controlled the 26th ranked Park Hill South Trojans, en route to the first district win in 6 years, by a score of 69-53.

Despite a third quarter run that put them down just 2, the Trojans trailed for almost the entirety of the contest, only leading for a total of 38 seconds, often relying on an offensive attack centered around Marqueas Bell, who would finish with 28.

The Hornets offensive attack served as a Swiss army knife, of sorts, as Dallas Whitney, who would go on to earn Metro Sports KC player of the week honors, would finish with 22, shooting 81 percent from the field.

The next biggest output came from do-it-all point guard, Alex Gunnels, who finished 8/8 from the charity stripe, for a total of 15 points. Gunnels, who's main reputation is as a pass first guard,

Seniors Iverson Neal and John Elful added 14 and 8 to the cause, Neal was 7/7 from the field and corralled 12 rebounds, Elful shot 4/5.

The Hornets took over in the fourth quarter, turning a 6 point lead to a 16 point lead in the final 7 minutes. The box score writes the picture in better terms, as the Hornets outrebounded the Trojans 35-17, shot 59 percent from the field as opposed to the Trojans 37 percent.

The Bell brothers were about the only offensive force, as they scored 39 of the Trojans 53. A Fritz timeout in the third seemed to alter a matchup on Marqueas Bell, which the Hornets would ride through the end of the contest.

The first half was contrary to the building narrative, as the Hornets came out fast, holding an 8 point lead at the break, and only trailing in the very early stages of the first.

The Hornet survive to face the top dog, second seeded Liberty, who holds the number 1 spot in the newest Metro Sports poll. The game is hosted at Park Hill, and will begin at 7:30! It's win or go home, so be there to support your Hornets!
