Football is Weird

The key to having great teams, especially in high school, is to win the games you're supposed to, and pull off some upsets along the way. So far, for the Hornets and Panthers alike- this proved true.

If you just looked at the stats, this game would have a true underdog, and it would undeniably be the Hornets. To say they didn't play the role well, is a lie. This same Panthers team beat Platte County 42-14, only managing 7 points against a Hornet defense that completely controlled the high-scoring offense of Park Hill South, all night.

Offensively, the Hornets found themselves in Panther territory on multiple occasions throughout the night, however, the problem that first arose in the Platte County game repeated itself, as tendencies often do.

The Hornet offense would pick up 40 or 50 yards and be knocking on the door, or in the red zone. Then they would stall. Friar and House would be met at the line, or pick up short gains, then Johnson wouldn't be able to find a receiver, and the Hornets would come out empty handed, after going for it on fourth down.

Late in the night, the score being 7-0 after a Mudia Rueben touchdown in the second quarter- the Hornet offense seemed to be in full control, marching inside the Park Hill South 10 yard line. A player communication issue gave the Panther defensive-line a clear lane to Friar in the backfield, and he coughed up the football.

With just enough time, the Hornet defense allows -4 yards to force a punt deep in Panther territory. Herb Bass was set to field the punt, but the pressure, as well as a knuckleball style punt proved just too much. Bass muffed the punt, right into the arms of a Panther defender, effectively ending the game.

Despite the loss, there are positive and negative takeaways for both sides. The Hornet defense has the ability to control games, unlike most other units in the state, and fans of this team have seen what this offense can do when hot. However, the offense has blanked the last 6 quarters, and undoubtedly needs to play better to have a shot in the district tournament.

The great thing about sports in general, and life, is that it all evens out. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Better days are in store for this Hornet program, and anyone who sees how hard this group of guys works knows the true talent this team has. The panic button isn't to be pushed, not yet, or at all.

It's homecoming week! The Hornets take on Oak Park in an age-old rivalry at home, this Friday, October 16th! The theme is gold out, and we hope to see you there! Check out NKCHornets.org/coverage for the stream link.
