Very First Home Game
After a tough loss in the Winnetonka Tournament championship against Blue Springs South, our Lady Hornets play in their home opener tonight against another tough opponent: the Grandview Bulldogs. The Lady Hornets have recently played Truman, Lee's Summit North, and Blue Springs in the tournament, picking up 2 wins (Truman and Lee's Summit North). I asked Coach Peace and Coach Lacy some question about the game and this is their responses.
How do you feel going into your first home game?
"I feel good with where we're at defensively. I think we have the capability of being an elite defensive team. Last week was a good test for us in the Winnetonka Tourney in which we faced 3 very tough teams. We were able to come out of it with two wins, so I am pleased with that"- Coach Lacy
"I feel good and I think our girls do too. Our girls are ready to play on their home court and look forward to facing a very good, very talented Grandview team." – Coach Peace
What things are you planning to do differently this season than last season?
"The gap in players talents this year is not very wide, so there should be plenty of opportunities for a lot of players on our team to get on the varsity floor. Practice quality, grades, and being a great teammate to each other are all things that will contribute more to playing time this year than they have in the past"- Coach Lacy
"We just want to grow and get better each time we play. We lost a 4-year starter last year in Angel Lee, so we're still trying to find someone to step up and fill her shoes. The girls are hungry and ready to play again, this time on their home court." – Coach Peace
What is your top goal for this season?
"Our top goal is to win conference and win districts." – Coach Peace
"As usual, we want to win conference this year. Last year was the first time 5 years we have not done that, so it left a sour taste in our mouth. We moved up in conference this year so we will have our hands full in winning, but I believe this team has the talent do so. Also, we want to win districts this year as well. We will find out this week who will be in our district, but that has always been a goal of ours as well" – Coach Lacy
Has anybody stood out to you and the coach staff so far?
"We have had very competitive practices thus far and I love the girls' competitive drive, but the thing that has truly stood out to me the most is the togetherness of this team. It has probably been the closest team I have ever had in 15 years of coaching and its is a joy to coach them every day." – Coach Lacy
"Ja'Mya Powell-Smith was Winnetonka Tournament MVP. She definitely is the key to our success, and we look forward to her having a great year."- Coach Peace
The girls will be playing at 7 P.M and you can watch it here!
