On Monday night, the Lady Hornets sought to avenge a previous loss to top-25 ranked Staley (14-5). The Hornets never quite found their momentum, and fell 58-18.
Â
Down the stretch, Lizzie Boehm and the high-powered drive and kick offense of the Falcons converted drive after drive, and long ball after long ball, simply overpowering a Hornet team that sits 3 due to injury, this including team leading scorer,
LaNicia Parker (knee).
Â
The Falcons converted on 5 of their first 6 three point attempts, including 3 by Boehm in the first, leading to a 20-5 lead to end the first, and a 31-9 lead to enter the half.
Â
The Hornets showed a bit of give in the 3rd quarter, enforcing a 6 point swing before Boehm, Ava Pickens and MaryPaige Miller effectively shut the door, scoring 7 straight to open up a 41-18 lead.
Â
The Hornets wouldn't find the bucket in the fourth, and the Falcons would add 17, putting 4 scorers in double-figures (Boehm, Miller, Pickens, and Liv Reynolds)
Â
Despite the big loss, there are still upsides for this young Hornet team, most of which are playing in big time roles for the first time, due to injury.
Â
The Hornets have been forced to sit Parker, as well as
Hailey Black (ankle), an outside shooter who adds defensive leverage, and fellow sophomore
Lily O'Brien (head) who is a consistent pass-first guard. With those key players out, we've seen a re-emergence of former frequent-flier
Liana Wainit, as well as a new age of talent ushered in;
Angeer Riak has been consistent as a paint force, Kenzie Doolin– although showing some forms of first year jitters– has been a breath of fresh air, as has Ar'Janay Landers.
Â
The Hornets now sit at 8-12 (2-4 in conference) and with limited time, look to get healthy and ready for postseason play. They next take the floor Friday, in an Oak Park doubleheader, and then have Senior Night next Monday against Lee's Summit!
