Hornets Soccer Open Season With Onslaught

Hornets 8 - Griffins 0

North Kansas City's girls' soccer team opened their season under less than ideal conditions, but the end result was picture perfect defeating Winnetonka 8-0 in 73 minutes on Tuesday evening. The game was moved to Winnetonka's new soccer stadium to take advantage of the all-weather turf. All the weather presented itself as there were heavy winds out of the north, constant drizzle and occasional downpours.

In the first half, both teams began slowly, but junior Bethany Uribe began the scoring 12 minutes in from just inside the 18, striking a shot through the legs of the Griffin's keeper. That would be followed up a few minutes later off of a free kick over a four-woman wall from 20 yards out to hit the top shelf by sophomore Ariana Perez. It was a strong strike and absolutely undefendable. The score would be 2-0 heading into halftime as the rain continued to fall.

Northtown opened the flood gates in the second half as Perez picked up where she left off in the 44th minute breaking one loose this time from 25 yards out. The left footed boot bounced just inside the right post for a 3-0 Hornets lead. Junior Adrianna Andretti got in on the barrage in the 50th minute as she broke loose of two defenders to find the back of the net and the rout was on.

The final four goals came fast and furious as sophomore Abrar Abdelrahman scored from just outside the penalty area, Andretti got her second score on a breakaway that pulled the keeper off her line and Uribe intercepted a pass from Winnetonka to score her second goal of the night. The evening was capped off and ended early with the eighth goal of the match as Perez scored on a fast break which found the pipes for a Northtown hat trick.

Credit to Winnetonka's keeper senior Marissa Colvin while she let eight in, was able to make a number of fantastic saves throughout the night. Northtown controlled time of possession and spend both halves in their own lower third much of the night. The Hornets improve to 1-0 on the year and will hit the road for two games facing off against Chrisman on Thursday evening and Fort Osage next Tuesday. They'll return home to Northgate's Soccer complex on Thursday, March 30 to take on Truman.
